Grants ranging from $1,500 to $15,000 to USA, Canada, and International nonprofits, universities, museums, civic institutions, and trade publishers for financial assistance to produce and publish non-fiction books. Funding is intended for publications on the subjects of art, architecture, and design; cultural history, the city, and related public issues; and conservation and preservation.

The work should appeal to an informed general audience, give evidence of high standards in editing, design, and production, and promise a reasonable shelf life. Book projects to which a university press, nonprofit, or trade publisher is already committed and for which there is a feasible distribution plan are usually preferred. Recipients of Furthermore grants are located throughout the USA and abroad but mainly in New York City and New York State and its Hudson Valley.

Estimated Size of Grant:

$1,500 - $15,000

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grant applicants must be 501(c)3 organizations; applications from individuals cannot be accepted. These may include civic and academic institutions, museums, independent and university presses and professional societies.

A large number of the projects concern New York State, New York City, and Hudson Valley subjects.

Furthermore cannot make grants to individuals.

Pre-Application Information:

You must apply at least three months before the anticipated press date. Unless you are seeking prepublication assistance (for research or writing), you should not apply before you have a publication plan that enables you to provide every item of information requested.

The grants are awarded twice annually with application deadlines of March 1 and September 1.

It takes approximately three months after the grant application deadline to complete review. Generally, grant decisions are announced around the beginning of June and the beginning of December.
